Stem Combinations and Transformations
The Heavenly Stems of a Four Pillars of Destiny chart have the potential to combine
and/or transform according to a proscribed set of qualifying factors. The conditions for
combinations and transformations are outlined in this articlẹ
The Ten Heavenly Stems
S1 Jia yang wood
S2 Yi yin wood
S3 Bing yang fire
S4 Ding yin fire
S5 Wu yang earth
S6 Ji yin earth
S7 Geng yang metal
S8 Xin yin metal
S9 Ren yang water
S10 Gui yin water
The Five Stem Combinations
Stem combinations are comprised of both a yin and a yang element, paired in a
domination cycle with the yang element as the dominator. The combinations also occur
5 places apart in the stem progression list (example: Jia and Ji are S1 and S6, Yi and
Geng are S2 and S7 and so on).
Combinations of the Heavenly Stems are based on the He Tu:
1. Jia combines with Ji, to transform into EARTH
2. Yi combines with Geng, to transform into METAL
3. Bing combines with Xin, to transform into WATER
4. Ding combines with Ren, to transform into WOOD
5. Wu combines with Gui, to transform into FIRE
The stem combinations are often referred to as “marriages”. To illustrate this, consider
the yang stem of each element as the “brother” and the yin stem as the “little sister”.
Example: Jia (yang – male) is the big brother to Yi (yin – female). The nature of Jia is
upright and steadfast. What can harm a treẻ An axe can chop it down. Only Geng -
refined, hard metal - can damage Jiạ Xin - soft, unrefined metal, or metal ore - is
useless. (However, too many trees will harm Geng metal – damage or dull the blade of
the axẹ)
The nature of Yi is soft and yielding, much like grass that moves gently in a breezẹ
Geng cannot hurt Yị Grass cannot be cut with a knife unless it is held in a bundlẹ Left
2
in its natural free state of motion, Yi is impervious to Geng. Therefore, Yi can be
beneficial to Jia if Geng is present. Jia will marry off his little sister to Geng:
Yi + Geng = Metal. Geng, as a brother-in-law, will not harm Jia, as he is too busy
combining with Yị The remaining stem pairs can be analyzed in a similar manner.
Stems will combine under certain conditions. Ađitional conditions must be met for an
elemental transformation to occur.
Conditions for Stem Combinations
There are several types of stem combinations depending upon the location of the stem
pairs on the chart, and whether or not there is competition between stems for a
combination. Rules and examples for each type are outlined below.
(A) Combinations Involving Adjacent Stems
(1) Stems must be adjacent.
Transformation will be successful if there is a catalyst in the Month Branch as
either innate qi or leftover qị
If there is no catalyst of innate or leftover qi in the Month Branch, there will
simply be a combination without transformation.
Example 1: Gui Ren Xin Bing
Mao Chen Hai Wu
Bing and Xin are adjacent. Hai water acts as a catalyst in the Month Branch, therefore
Bing and Xin combine successfully to transform into water.
(2) If there is a successful combination with transformation, the original nature of the
two stems will be changed.
Example 2: Gui Ren Xin Bing
Mao Chen Hai Wu
Bing and Xin successfully combine to transform into water, therefore Bing is no
longer Fire and Xin is no longer Metal. Bing and Xin will instead become two Pi
Chien (Ren Water).
(3) In the case of a combination without transformation (no innate qi as a catalyst),
the stems involved lose their original naturẹ They can no longer control other
stems, control the branch underneath, or be enhanced by the branch underneath.
Example 3: Bing Gui Xin Bing
Chen Hai Mao Chen
3
As there is no innate qi of fire (Bing/Ding) and metal (Geng/Xin) in the branches,
both Bing and Xin become neutralized.
(4) In case of a combination without transformation, a stem with innate Qi in the
branch will keep its original naturẹ
Example 4: Wu Gui Yi Wu
Wu Chou Mao Yin
Wu and Gui combine (Fire), but as there is no innate qi of fire in the Month Branch,
transformation will not occur. However, Wu earth has root in Chou earth’s innate qi (Ji
earth), therefore the original nature of Wu is still in effect.
(5) In the case of a combination - with or without transformation - involving the Day
Master, the original nature of the DM will remain.
Example 5: Wu Gui Yi Wu
Wu Chou Mao Yin
Wu and Gui combine (Fire). The original nature of Gui (water) will remain with or
without transformation of the stem combination.
(B) Combinations Involving Separated Stems
(1) Stems that are separated will only have the intention to combine (flirting), but not
the ability to transform (marriage).
Example 6: Jia Geng Bing Yi
Shen Xu Xu Hai
Yi and Geng are apart; even though there is leftover qi of Xin Metal in Month Branch Xu
as a catalyst to transformation, such transformation will not take placẹ
Example 7: Bing Gui Xin Bing
Chen Chou Mao Chen
The Year Stem Bing is adjacent to the Month Stem Xin, but as there is no catalyst to
transformation within the Month Branch, it is simply a combination without
transformation. The Hour Stem Bing is not adjacent to Month Stem Xin, therefore these
cannot combinẹ
(C) Jealousy Combination
The Month Stem and Hour Stem both want to combine with DM.
4
Example 8: Ren Ding Ren Bing
Yin Si Chen Shen
Two Ren (Month Stem and Hour Stem) are trying to combine with the DM Ding.
(D) Fighting Combination
A combination where the DM is not the biđing target.
Example 9: Bing Ding Ren Ding
Wu Chou Yin Chou
DM Ding and Year Stem Ding both want to combine with the Month Stem Ren.
§ Jealousy combinations or fighting combinations will not transform; the original
nature of the stem remains intact.
§ A male chart with two Tsai deities fighting to combine with DM, or a female chart
with two Kuan/Sha deities fighting to combine with DM, indicates the potential for
involvement in a “love triangle” or affair.
(E) Priority Sequence of Jealousy and Fighting Combinations
The priority sequence for stem combinations:
A Year Stem will combine first, followed by Month, Day and Hour (the Hour
Stem will be the last to combine).
Example 10: Bing Ding Ren Ding
Wu Chou Yin Chou
The Month Stem Ren combines with the Year Stem Ding first; therefore Ren will not
combine with DM Ding.
· In a female 4PD chart: If the husband deity combines with the Year Stem, his deepest
feelings may not be toward the DM. The two will be physically together but
emotionally apart in the marriage - sleeping in the same bed but with different
dreams.
· In a male 4PD chart: With two Ding stems fighting to combine with Ren (Ren in
between the two Ding stems), the DM will be weakened tremendouslỵ If the DM is
strong, career prospects may be dim; if the DM is weak, career prospects will be
much better. Much depends upon the luck pillars.
(F) Paired Combination
A paired combination refers to the situation when all four stems are grouped into two
pairs of combinations.
5
Example 11: Ren Ding Ren Ding
Yin Chou Yin Chou
In this example with two Ding and two Ren stems, each stem will find its own
combination without a fight. As there is a catalyst in the Month Branch, both pairs will
transform. All four stems will transform into Cheng Yin in this chart.
· In a female chart: If there are no luck or annual Ding or Ren stems involved, the
marriage or relationship will be very smooth and harmonious. Once another Ding or
Ren stem is involved, there will be a third party to sour the relationship.
· In a male chart: The marriage or relationship will not be affected.
(G) Stem combination with Original Nature Changed
Example 12: O Xin Ding Ren
O O Mao O
Ding and Ren combine and transform with the catalyst in the Month Branch Maọ After
transformation, Ding is no longer fire and Ren is no longer water - both will become
Wood.
Example 13: O Ding Ren Ding
O O Yin O
In this example, Ren (Cheng Kuan) represents the husband. The Year Stem Ding will
combine ahead of the DM and is subsequently transformed. This denotes that the sister
or a female friend will take the husband (alienation of affection).
(H) Stem Combination with Original Nature Unchanged
Example 14: O Yi Geng Yi
O O Shen O
Geng will combine first with the Year Stem Yị There is a catalyst of transformation
within the Month Branch Shen, so that the Year Stem Yi is transformed into metal (Geng
remains metal). Metal to DM Yi is husband. The husband deity remains in the indicating
that the husband will stay in the marriage but will have an affair with another woman.
Example 15: O Jia Bing Xin
You O Mao O
The Month Stem Bing and Year Stem Xin combinẹ Without a catalyst in the Month
Branch, there is no transformation. Both Bing and Xin should have lost their respective
original natures. However, Xin, with root in the Hour Branch You, will keep its original
nature of metal.
6
(I) Jealousy and Fighting Combinations
§ Jealousy occurs only when the Month Stem and Hour Stem are both trying to
combine with DM.
§ Jealousy and fighting combinations involving the DM will not transform.
Example 16: Ren Ding Ren Bing
In this example, the Month Stem and Hour Stem are both trying to combine with the DM.
Example 17: Ren Ding Ren Bing
In a female chart, two Cheng Kuan fighting to combine with the DM indicates two males
fighting for one woman. The wife may have two husbands, or have an extramarital
affair.
Example 18: O Ding Ren Ding
In this example for a female chart, Ren will combine with the Year Stem first, indicating
the husband has another lover.
Example 19: Bing Xin Bing Bing
Three Bing fighting for one Xin DM in this female chart (three males fighting for one
woman) indicates the possibility of many affairs and marriages.
(J) Penalties, Clashes and Combinations
§ For clashes and combinations, combinations take precedencẹ
§ For penalties and combinations, penalties take precedencẹ
(K) Luck Pillar or Annual Pillar with Combination
§ For the transformation of a combination, there must be root in the Month Branch
as either innate qi or leftover qị
(L) Special Cases
§ Whenever the transformed element is controlled by the innate qi of the Month
Branch, even though there is leftover qi in the Month Branch acting as the
catalyst, such a combination will not transform.
Example 20: O Jia Bing Xin
Zi O Chen O
Bing and Xin combine to form water. The Month Branch Chen earth contains
leftover qi of water (Gui), but the innate qi of earth (Wu) controls leftover qi water,
therefore the transformation to water will not be successful.

Combinations and Transformations of the Branches
As with the Heavenly Stems, the Earthly Branches have the affinity to combine in a
number of ways. Combinations can occur with or without elemental transformation, but
either scenario will have an impact on the dynamics and interpretation of a Four Pillars of
Destiny Chart. The various types of branch combinations and conditions for
transformation are discussed in this article.
The 12 Earthly Branches
The table below lists the twelve branches along with their respective attributes.
Number Branch Branch Polarity Element Zodiac Sign
B1 Zi yang water Rat
B2 Chou yin earth Ox
B3 Yin yang wood Tiger
B4 Mao yin wood Rabbit
B5 Chen yang earth Dragon
B6 Si yin fire Snake
B7 Wu yang fire Horse
B8 Wei yin earth Sheep
B9 Shen yang metal Monkey
B10 You yin metal Rooster
B11 Xu yang earth Dog
B12 Hai yin water Pig
A. The Six Branch Combinations
Zi & Chou = Earth
Yin & Hai = Wood
Mao & Xu = Fire
Chen &You = Metal
Si & Shen = Water
Wu & Wei = Fire
For the Six Combinations to combine and transform, three basic conditions must be met:
§ The branches must be adjacent.
§ There must be a “Transformation God” in the stems as the catalyst.
2
§ The Transformation God in the stem and the innate qi of the Month Branch must
“match” – they must be of the same element, OR the Transformation God in the stem
must be enhanced by the innate qi of the Month Branch. Innate qi refers to the first,
most prosperous, hidden stem in any branch.
Example 1: O O O Wu
O Zi Chou O
The Day Branch Zi and the Month Branch Chou will combine and successfully
transform into earth with the Year Stem Wu (yang earth) as the Transformation God.
The innate qi of Chou is Ji (yin earth). The transformation God and the innate qi of
the Month Branch are of the same element.
Example 2: O O O Ren
O Si Shen O
Si and Shen, with Ren (yang water) in the Year Stem as the catalyst, will combine to
transform to water. The innate qi of metal (Geng) in the Month Branch Shen
enhances the transformed element of water. The Transformation God in the stems for
this example could have been either Ren or Gui.
Bearing in mind the three conditions, the Month Branch will establish
which combinations in a chart will have the potential to transform:
If the innate qi of the Month Branch is metal, the potential exists for the
transformation of metal and water combinations. Metal (Geng/Xin) in the stems for
a metal combination or water (Ren/Gui) in the stems for a water combination is
necessary for a successful transformation.
Example 3: Xin O O O
O O You Chen
Chen and You combine to transform as metal.
The Day Master must be born in Shen or You months with innate qi of metal (or
Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei months with innate qi of earth). Metal (Geng or Xin) must
appear in a stem.
If the innate qi of the Month Branch is water, the potential exists for the
transformation of water and wood combinations. There must be water (Ren/Gui) in
the stems for a water combination or wood (Jia/Yi) in the stems for a wood
combination (Transformation God) for a successful transformation.
Example 4: O O O Ren
O Si Shen O
3
Si and Shen combine to transform as water.
The Day Master must be born in Hai or Zi month (or Shen/You month), with innate qi
of water or metal (enhancing element) in the Month Branch. The Transformation God
for a water combination will be water (Ren or Gui) in the stems. In this example, the
Year Stem Ren is the transformation catalyst.
If the innate qi of the Month Branch is wood, the potential exists for the
transformation of wood and fire combinations. Once again, there must be a wood
(Jia/Yi) or fire (Bing/Ding) Transformation God in the stems as the catalyst – wood
for a wood combination, fire for a fire combination.
Example 5: O Yi O O
O Hai Yin O
Yin and Hai combine to transform as wood.
The Day Master must be born in Yin or Mao months (or Hai/Zi months) with innate
qi of wood or water in the Month branch. Wood (Jia/Yi) must appear in the stems.
If the innate qi of the Month Branch is Fire, the potential exists for the
transformation of fire and earth combinations. Fire (Bing/Ding) or earth (Wu/Ji)
must appear in the stems - fire for a fire combination, earth for an earth
transformation.
Example 6: O O O Bing
O Wei Wu O
Wu and Wei combine to transform as Fire.
The Day Master must be born in Si or Wu months (or Yin/Mao months), with innate
qi of fire or wood in the Month Branch. Fire (Bing or Ding) must appear in the
stems.
Example 7: O O Ding O
Xu Mao Mao O
Mao and Xu combine to transform as Fire.
The Day Master must be born in Si or Wu month (or Yin/Mao months), with innate qi
of fire or wood in the Month-branch. In this example, the Month Branch Mao’s innate
qi (Yi – yin wood) is enhancing the fire. Fire (Bing or Ding) must appear in the
stems.
If the innate qi of the Month Branch is earth, the potential exists for the
transformation of earth and metal combinations. Earth (Wu/Ji) or metal
4
(Geng/Xin) must appear in the stems – earth for an earth combination, metal for a
metal combination.
Example 8: O O O Wu
Zi Chou Chen O
Zi and Chou combine to transform as earth.
The Day Master must be born in Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei months (or Si/Wu months), with
innate qi of earth or fire in the Month Branch, and earth (Wu/Ji) in the stems.
Table of Potential Combination Transformations
If the Month Branch is "Metal", there can only be transformations of "Metal" and 'Water".
If the Month Branch is " Water", there can only be transformations of "Water" and "Wood".
If the Month Branch is "Wood", there can only be transformations of "Wood" and "Fire"
If the Month Branch is "Fire", there can only be transformations of "Fire" and "Earth"
If the Month Branch is "Earth", there can only be transformation of "Earth" and "Metal".
Month of Birth
(Month Branch)
Potential Combination
Transformations
Yin Wood and fire
Mao Wood and fire
Chen Earth and metal
Si Fire and earth
Wu Fire and earth
Wei Earth and metal
Shen Metal and water
You Metal and water
Xu Earth and metal
Hai Water and wood
Zi Water and wood
Chou Earth and metal
Branch Position
§ For the Six Combinations to transform, the branches involved must be adjacent to
each other:
Hour Branch-Day Branch
Day Branch-Month Branch
Month Branch-Year Branch
Example 9: O O O Wu
O Zi Chou O
5
The branches Zi and Chou (Day Branch and Month Branch) are adjacent and will
transform as earth with the Year Stem Wu as the Transformation God.
§ Branches that are separated have the intention to combine but cannot transform. Such
combinations can affect penalties and clashes.
Example 10: O O O JI
Zi O Chou O
The Hour Branch Zi and the Month Branch Chou are separated by the Day Branch,
therefore there is no transformation - only an intention to combine.
Summary and Further Conclusions
For any combination:
1. The branches must be adjacent.
2. Ascertain if there is a Transformation God in the Stems. Under normal
circumstances, the element of the Transformation God must be of the same element
of the element of the transformed combination (for example, a water stem for a Si &
Shen = water combination). The Transformation God can be in any position in the
stems.
3. Check to see if the innate qi in the Month Branch matches or enhances the element of
the Transformation God. If so, the combination will transform. (For example, for a
Si & Shen = Water combination, the innate qi of the month branch must be water or
metal.)
4. If the innate Qi does not match the Transformation God’s element, there will be no
transformation - only a combination. With such a combination, both branches will be
“tied up” or inactivated, and will not have any effect in the chart.
5. If the polarity of the Transformation God in the stem is Yin, both branches will
transform as Yin.
6. If the polarity of the Transformation God in the stem is Yang, both branches will
transform as Yang.
B. Jealousy Branch Combinations
§ The Hour Branch and Month Branch are both trying to combine with the Day
Branch.
Example 11: O O O O
Shen Si Shen You
Two Shen branches are fighting to combine with the You Day Branch.
6
§ The priority order for combinations is as follows:
1. Year Branch-Month Branch
2. Month Branch-Day Branch
3. Day Branch-Hour Branch
Example 12: O O O O
Mao Shen Si Shen
The Year Branch Shen will combine with the Month Branch Si ahead of the Day
Branch. This will not be classified as Jealousy, but rather as “Fighting”.
§ The three branches involved must be in alternated order.
Example 13: O O O O
Chou Shen Si Si
The Day Branch Shen is not in between the two Si branches.
One Shen does not combine with two Si. This is not classified as Jealousy.
Summary and Further Conclusions
1. Jealousy Combinations will not transform, due to an intention of “flirting” without a
true commitment.
2. Jealousy Combinations indicate possible extramarital affairs, flirtation and noncommittal
intention.
C. Double-Paired Combinations
§ Branches must be adjacent.
§ There must be a Transformation God (flower/fruit) in the stems, in addition to the
appropriate Month Branch (innate qi).
Example 14: O Ren O Gui
Si Shen Shen Si
In this example, there are two pairs of Si-Shen combinations. With Shen month of
birth and Ren or Gui in the stems, both pairs will transform.
Example 15: O Geng Ren O
You Chen Shen Si
Chen and You combine as metal. In Shen month of birth, if there is Geng or Xin
in the stems, this combination will transform.
Si and Shen combine as water. In Shen month of birth, if there is Geng, Xin, Ren or
Gui in the stems, this combination will transform.
7
Example 16: O O O O
You Shen Chen Si
There are two different combinations in this example – Chen and You, and Si and
Shen. Since the appropriate pairs are not adjacent, there is only the intention to
combine. Transformation will not occur.
D. Directional Branch Combinations
Directional combinations involve three branches. There are five such combinations:
Eastern Wood Directional Combination: Yin-Mao-Chen
Yin, Mao and Chen are the branches associated with the three months, or season, of
spring, when wood qi dominates.
This combination must be completed with all three branches of Yin-Mao-Chen (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Jia or Yi in the stems, or both Ding
and Ren in the stems.
Example 17: O O O Jia
Chen Yin Mao O
Yin, Mao, and Chen appear in the branches with a Jia stem.
Southern Fire Directional Combination: Si-Wu-Wei
Si, Wu and Wei are the branches associated with the season of summer, when fire qi
dominates.
This combination must be completed with all three branches of Si-Wu-Wei (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Bing or Ding in the stems, or both Wu
and Gui in the stems.
Example 18: O O O Ding
Si Wu Wei O
Si, Wu and Wei appear in the branches with a Ding stem.
Western Metal Directional Combination: Shen-You-Xu
Shen, You and Xu are the branches associated with the season of autumn, when metal qi
dominates.
8
This combination must be completed with all three branches of Shen-You-Xu (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Geng or Xin in the stems, or both Yi
and Geng in the stems.
Example 19: Geng O O O
O Xu You Shen
Shen, You and Xu appear in the branches with a Geng stem.
Northern Water Directional Combination: Hai-Zi-Chou
Hai, Zi and Chou are the branches associated with the season of winter, when water qi
dominates.
This combination must be completed with all three branches of Hai-Zi-Chou (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Ren or Gui in the stems, or both Bing
and Xin in the stems.
Example 20: O O Gui O
Zi Hai Chou O
Hai, Zi and Chou appear in the branches with a Gui stem.
Central Earth Directional Combination: Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei
The branches Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei represent the months between the seasons when
earth qi dominates, and also the center of the Luo Shu, which is earth in nature. (This
relationship is also known as the “Four Earths”, while the other four directional
relationships are often referred to as the “Three Meetings”.)
This combination must be completed with all four branches Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Wu or Ji in the stems, or both Jia and
Ji in the stems.
Example 21: O Wu O O
Xu Chen Chou Wei
Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei appear in the branches with a Wu stem.
E. Triple Elemental Combinations (Gua Combinations)
There are four such combinations. These relationships are also referred to as the “Three
Unities”. If the twelve branches were placed in a circle, the relative positions of these
branch associations would be seen to form equilateral triangles. Note that the resulting
element after transformation is the same as that of the middle branch in each group.
9
Triple Elemental Combination of Wood: Hai-Mao-Wei
This combination must be completed with all three branches Hai-Mao-Wei (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Jia or Yi, or both Ding and Ren in the
stems.
Example 22: O O Jia O
Mao Wei Hai O
Hai-Mao-Wei in the branches with Jia in the stems.
Triple Elemental Combination of Fire: Yin-Wu-Xu
This combination must be completed with all three branches Yin-Wu-Xu (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Bing or Ding, or both Wu and Gui in
the stems.
Example 23: O O O Ding
O Yin Xu Wu
Yin-Wu-Xu in the branches with Ding in the stems.
Triple Elemental Combination of Metal: Si-You-Chou
This combination must be completed with all three branches Si-You-Chou (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Geng or Xin, or Both Yi and Geng in
the stems.
Example 24: O Xin O O
Si You Chou O
Si-You-Chou in the branches with Xin in the stems.
Triple Elemental Combination of Water: Shen-Zi-Chen
This combination must be completed with all three branches Shen-Zi-Chen (in any
sequence), with a transformation catalyst of either Ren or Gui, or both Bing and Xin in
the stems.
Example 25: O O Ren O
O Shen Zi Chen
Shen-Zi-Chen in the branches with Ren in the stems.
10
F. Half Elemental Combination (Half Gua Combination)
There are eight such combinations, all stemming from the Triple Elemental Combinations
above. The center branch, which establishes the elemental nature of the transformed
combination, can combine with the branch on either side to form a ‘half combination”.
Note that the center branch from the Triple Combination must always be present:
Shen & Zi, or Zi & Chen = Water (not Shen and Chen)
Hai & Mao, or Mao & Wei = Wood (not Hai and Wei)
Yin & Wu, or Wu & Xu = Fire (not Yin and Xu)
Si & You, or You & Chou = Metal (not Si and Chou)
The two branches in a Half Elemental Combination do not need to be adjacent to
transform.
First Half Elemental Combination of Wood
Definition: Branches Hai and Mao with a transformation catalyst of Jia or Yi, or both
Ding and Ren, in the stems.
Example 26: O O O Jia
Hai Mao O O
Hai-Mao Half combination of wood with catalyst Jia in the stems.
Second Half Elemental Combination of Wood
Definition: Branches Mao and Wei, with a transformation catalyst of Jia or Yi, or both
Ding and Ren in the stems.
Example 27: O Yi O O
O Mao O Wei
Mao-Wei Half Combination of wood with Yi in the stems.
First Half Elemental Combination of Fire
Definition: Branches Yin and Wu, with a transformation catalyst of Bing or Ding, or
Both Wu and Gui in the stems.
Example 28: O O Bing O
O Wu O Yin
Yin-Wu Half Combination of fire with Bing in the stems.
11
Second Half Elemental Combination of Fire
Definition: Branches Wu and Xu, with a transformation catalyst of Bing or Ding, or both
Wu and Gui in the stems.
Example 29: O Ding O O
O O Xu Wu
Wu-Xu Half Combination of fire with Ding in the stems.
First Half Elemental Combination of Metal
Definition: Branches Si and You, with a transformation catalyst of Geng or Xin, or
both Yi and Geng in the stems.
Example 30: O O Geng O
Si You O O
Si-You Half Combination of metal with Geng in the stems.
Second Half Elemental Combination of Metal
Definition: Branches You and Chou, with a transformation catalyst of Geng or Xin, or
both Yi and Geng in the stems.
Example 31: Xin O O O
O You Chou O
You-Chou Half Combination of metal with Xin in the stems.
First Half Elemental Combination of Water
Definition: Branches Shen and Zi, with a transformation catalyst of Ren or Gui, or
both Bing and Xin in the stems.
Example 32: O O Ren O
Shen Zi O O
Shen-Zi Half Combination of water with Ren in the stems.
Second Half Elemental Combination of Water
Definition: Branches Zi and Chen, with a transformation catalyst of Ren or Gui, or both
Bing and Xin in the stems.
12
Example 33: O Gui O O
O O Zi Chen
Zi-Chen Half Combination of water with Gui in the stems.
Summary and Further Conclusions
§ Directional Combinations must be completed with all three branches, although
they do not necessarily need to be adjacent. There must be a transformation
catalyst in one of the stems in order for transformation to occur.
§ There are no “half” combinations with the Directional Combinations.
§ For Half Elemental Combinations, the First Half is considered stronger than the
Second Half.
§ For Half Elemental Combinations, only two branches are needed (not necessarily
adjacent). With an appropriate catalyst in the stems, these branches will combine
and transform.
§ Directional Combinations are stronger than, and will therefore transform before,
Elemental Combinations.
§ Elemental Combinations are stronger than, and will transform before, Half
Elemental Combinations.
§ First Half Elemental Combinations are stronger than, and will transform before,
Second Half Combinations.
§ Half Elemental Combinations are stronger than, and will transform before, Six
Branch Combinations.
§ For any combinations lacking a catalyst to effect a transformation: the branches
involved will be “tied-up”, able only to keep their innate Qi. All leftover qi or intomb
qi will be lost in the process. This is known as “Peeling the Skin”.
§ Any combinations lacking a transformation catalyst in the stems of the natal chart
will transform when that transformation catalyst appears in the Luck Pillar stem
or Annual Pillar stem.
§ The Yin or Yang of the transformed Element follows the Yin or Yang of the
catalyst.
13
G. Double Paired Half Elemental Combinations
These will transform if there is a catalyst in the stems, otherwise they will be
combinations only and all branches involved will become neutral (“tied-up”) without any
effect to the chart.
Example 34: O O O O
Hai Mao Hai Mao
Two pairs of Hai-Mao Half Combination of Wood will transform only if there is Jia
or Yi, or both Ding and Ren, in the stems.
H. Jealousy Half Elemental Combinations
There will be no transformation with any Jealousy Half Elemental Combinations.
Branches involved will be left with only innate qi in the “Peeling the Skin” process.
Example 35: O O O O
Yin Wu Yin You
Yin-Wu-Yin is an example of a Jealousy Half Elemental Combination of Fire. The
leftover Qi in Yin will be “peeled” off (Bing – fire), leaving only the innate qi of Jia
wood. Wu remains unchanged – it is the jealous branches that are impacted.
I. Other Combinations
Sequence of combinations:
Example 36: O O O O
Shen Zi Shen Si
In this example, the Year Branch “Si” combines with Month-branch “Shen” to form
water first. The Day Branch “Zi” and Hour-branch “Shen” form a Half Combination
of water later. There is no fighting - therefore this example does not represent a
Jealousy Combination.
If there are catalysts in the stems, both combinations can transform separately.
Example 37: O O O O
O Wu Xu Mao
Mao and Xu combine to form fire as a Six Branch Combination.
Wu and Xu combine to form a Half Elemental Combination.
A Half Elemental Combination will transform before a Six Branch Combination,
therefore Mao-Xu cannot combine.
14
J. Combinations and Clashes
Combinations can nullify clashes.
Example 38: O O O O
O Xu Wu Zi
In this example, Wu and Xu form a Half Elemental Combination of fire, therefore
there will not be a clash between Zi and Wu.
K. Hidden Branch Combinations (Directional)
There are four such directional combinations:
The Filled-In Combination of Wood
Example 39: O O Yi O
Yin Chen O O
Yin-(Mao)-Chen, Eastern Wood Combination: Yi fills in as “Mao” to complete the
combination.
The Filled-In Combination of Fire
Example 40: O Ding O O
Wei O Si O
Si-(Wu)-Wei will form the Southern Fire Combination: Ding fills in as “Wu” to
complete the combination.
The Filled-In Combination of Metal
Example 41: O O O Xin
O Shen Xu O
Shen-(You)-Xu will form the Western Metal Combination: Xin fills in as “You” to
complete the combination.
The Filled in Combination of Water
Example 42: O O Gui O
Hai O Chou O
Hai-(Zi)-Chou will form the Northern Water Combination: Gui fills in as “Zi” to
complete the combination.
15
L. Hidden Branch Combinations (Elemental)
There are four such elemental combinations.
The Filled-In Combination of Wood
Example 43: O O O Yi
Hai Wei O O
Hai-(Mao)-Wei will form a combination of wood: Yi fills in as “Mao” to complete
the combination.
The Filled-In Combination of Fire
Example 44: Ding O O O
O Yin O Xu
Yin-(Wu)-Xu will form a combination of fire: Ding fills in as “Wu” to complete the
combination.
The Filled-In Combination of Metal
Example 45: O Xin O O
O O Si Chou
Si-(You)-Chou will form a combination of metal: Xin fills in as “You” to complete
the combination.
The Filled-In Combination of Water
Example 46: O O Gui O
Shen O O Chen
Shen-(Zi)-Chen will form a combination of water: Gui fills in as “Zi” to complete the
combination.
M. Hidden Filled-In Combination of In-tomb Qi
There are four In-tomb Qi combinations:
Wood God out of the Tomb
Example 46: O O O Jia
Wu O Shen O
16
Wu-(Wei)-Shen: the in-tomb qi in Wei is Yi (wood), with Jia or Yi in the stems.
Fire God out of the Tomb
Example 47: O Ding O O
You O O Hai
You-(Xu)-Hai: the in-tomb qi in Xu is Ding (fire), with Bing or Ding in the stems.
Metal God out of the Tomb
Example 48: O O Geng O
Yin Zi O O
Zi-(Chou)-Yin: the in-tomb qi in Chou is Xin (metal), with Geng or Xin in the stems.
Water God out of the Tomb
Example 49: Gui O O O
O Si Mao O
Mao-(Chen)-Si: the in-tomb qi in Chen is Gui (water), with Ren or Gui in the stems.
N. Hidden Combinations
There are other hidden combinations in the Four Pillars of Destiny involving two
branches or a stem and a branch.

Selecting the Useful Deity
Favorable and Unfavorable Elements in a Four Pillars of Destiny Chart
The chart types (or patterns) mentioned in the following text are described in the file
“Strength or Weakness of the Day Master/Chart Structures and Conditions” which
should be used as a cross-reference to this document.
The Useful Deity is the deity that is most essential, or necessary, to a Four Pillars of
Destiny chart to bring the Day Master into “water level” balance.
§ If the Useful Deity appears and is strong in the chart, such a chart is considered an
excellent chart with prospects for good fortune.
§ If the Useful Deity does not appear in the chart, such a chart is not considered a good
chart.
Useful Deities for Formal Pattern Charts
There are four basic rules in selecting the Useful Deity for charts that fall within the Eight
Formal (Regular) Patterns.
(1) Enhancing and Controlling
The Day Master can be likened to one’s own self, or body. The remaining seven stems
and branches are considered as the surrounding (environmental) situation in which the
Day Master functions. The principal concept of Four Pillars interpretation is to assess the
strength and balance of the Day Master and the other stems and branches appearing in the
chart.
§ If the overall strength of the Day Master is strong, Cheng Kuan/Chi Sha (power)
and Shih Shen/Shang Kuan (intelligence) are needed to control and weaken the
Day Master and achieve the balance level.
§ If the overall strength of the Day Master is weak, Cheng Yin/Pien Yin (resource)
and Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai (parallel) are needed to enhance and assist the Day
Master to achieve the balance level.
(2) Mediating
When two opposing and equally strong elements appear in a chart, it is necessary to
employ a mediating element. Such a mediator connects the clashing/battling elements,
mitigating the conflict and establishing balance.
This concept is the same as the Feng Shui technique of utilizing the reductive cycle to
remedy a domination cycle. The result is the creation of an enhancing cycle.
2
§ If Wood and Earth are equally strong, Fire is needed to mediate.
§ If Fire and Metal are equally strong, Earth is needed to mediate.
§ If Earth and Water are equally strong, Metal is needed to mediate.
§ If Metal and Wood are equally strong, Water is needed to mediate.
§ If Water and Fire are equally strong, Wood is needed to mediate.
(3) Illness and Remedies
A Day Master that is either too strong or too weak designates “illness” in Four Pillars. If
a chart contains Cheng Kuan/Chi Sha to control a strong Day Master, or Cheng Yin/Pien
Yin/Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai to enhance or assist a weak Day Master, these are considered
the remedies. If there are no visible remedies in the chart, they may appear in the luck
pillars.
(4) Adjusting the Temperature
The month (season) and the time of birth (day or night) indicate the “temperature” of the
chart - cold, hot, wet or dry. The temperature impacts all elements in a chart.
Winter is coldest, summer is hottest, water is the most wet, and fire is driest.
To achieve a balanced temperature, if a chart is:
§ Too cold – warm it up with heat.
§ Too hot – cool it off.
§ Too wet – dry it up with fire.
§ Too dry – moisten it with water.
Useful Deities for Other Chart Patterns
The Solo-Strength Types:
(1) The Wood Type – Wood is the Useful Deity.
(2) The Fire Type – Fire is the Useful Deity.
(3) The Earth Type – Earth is the Useful Deity.
(4) The Metal Type – Metal is the Useful Deity.
(5) The Water Type – Water is the Useful Deity.
The Follow Types:
(1) Follow the Cheng Kuan Type – Cheng Kuan/Chi Sha are the Useful Deities.
(2) Follow the Chi Sha Type – Chi Sha/Cheng Kuan are the Useful Deities.
(3) Follow the Tsai Type – Cheng Tsai/Pien Tsai are the Useful Deities.
(4) Follow the Children Type – Shih Shen/Shang Kuan are the Useful Deities.
(5) Follow the Weak Intensity Type – the strongest deity in the chart is the Useful Deity.
(6) Follow the Strong Intensity Type – the strongest deity in the chart is the Useful Deity.
3
The Transformation Types:
(1) Jia/Ji Transformed Earth Type – Earth is the Useful Deity.
(2) Yi/Geng Transformed Metal Type – Metal is the Useful Deity.
(3) Bing/Xin Transformed Water Type – Water is the Useful Deity.
(4) Ding/Ren Transformed Wood Type – Wood is the Useful Deity.
(5) Wu/Gui Transformed Fire Type – Fire is the Useful Deity.
§ The Useful Deity is the pivotal key in Four Pillars of Destiny. The Useful Deity must
be strong and powerful in order to help the entire chart. Therefore, the Useful Deity
should not be “hurt” (weakened or controlled); rather, it should be enhanced or
assisted.
§ If the Useful Deity is not strong enough to bring the chart into balance, other deities
that enhance or assist the Useful Deity are considered the Favorable Deities.
§ If the Useful Deity is hurt (elements that control or weaken the Useful Deity appear
or are strong in the chart), other deities that help to protect the Useful Deity are
considered the Favorable Deities.
§ Any deities that harm the Useful Deity or Favorable Deities are considered
Unfavorable Deities.
Useful Deities of the Ten Stems
Following are guidelines are on how strengthen or weaken each of the Ten Heavenly
Stems.
The section that that ensues on five-element theory outlines the relationships between the
yin and yang aspects of the elements - why, for example, Geng can be used to weaken Jia,
whereas Xin is useless, and why Ding can weaken wood but Bing causes it to grow.
(1) Jia Yang Wood
If Jia is weak, Ren or Gui is needed.
If Jia is strong, Geng is needed. (If Geng is weak, use Wu Earth to strengthen Geng. If
Geng is too strong, Ding Fire is used. If there is no Ding Fire, use Ren to weaken Geng.)
If the temperature is too hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is too cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(2) Yi Yin Wood
If Yi is weak, Gui water is needed.
If Yi is strong, Bing Fire is needed. (Do not use Geng Metal to control Yi. If Geng is
strong in the chart, use Bing Fire to control Geng.)
4
If the temperature is too hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is too cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(3) Bing Yang Fire
If Bing is weak, Jia Wood is needed.
If Bing is strong, Ren Water is needed. (If Ren is weak, use Geng Metal to enhance Ren.
If there is too much Ren Water, Wu Earth is needed to control Ren. If Wu Earth is
strong, use Jia Wood to control Wu Earth.)
(4) Ding Yin Fire
If Ding is weak, Jia Wood is needed. (If there is no Jia Wood, Yi Wood may be used
provided Bing Fire is used as well.)
If Ding is strong, Ren or Gui Water is needed. (If Water is strong, use Wu Earth to
control Water. If Wu Earth is strong, use Jia Wood to control Wu Earth.)
If Jia Wood is used, Geng metal must be used as well.
(5) Wu Yang Earth
If Wu is weak, Bing Fire is needed.
If Wu is strong, Jia Wood is needed.
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(6) Ji Yin Earth
If Ji is weak, Bing Fire is needed.
If Ji is strong, Jia Wood is needed. (If Jia is strong, use Geng to control Jia. If Geng is
strong, use Bing to control Geng, or Ren/Gui to weaken Geng. If Ren is strong, use Wu
to control Ren. If Bing is strong, use Ren/Gui to control Bing.)
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(7) Geng Yang Metal
If Geng is weak, Wu/Ji Earth is needed. (If Earth is strong, use Jia Wood to control
Earth.)
If Geng is strong, Ding Fire is needed. (If Ding is weak, use Jia to enhance Ding. If Jia is
strong, use Geng to control Jia.)
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
5
(8) Xin Yin Metal
If Xin is weak, Ji Earth is needed. (If Earth is strong, use Jia to control Earth.)
If Xin is strong, Ren Water is needed to weaken Xin. (If Ren is weak, use Geng to
enhance Ren.)
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(9) Ren Yang Water
If Ren is weak, Geng Metal is needed.
If Ren is strong, Jia Wood is needed to weaken, or Wu Earth to control. (If Earth is
strong, use Jia Wood to control Earth.)
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
(10) Gui Yin Water
If Gui is weak, Xin Metal is needed.
If Gui is strong, Wu Earth is needed. (If Wu Earth is strong, use Jia Wood to control. If
Jia Wood is strong, use Geng Metal to control. If Geng Metal is strong, use Ding Fire to
control.)
If the temperature is hot, Gui Water is needed.
If the temperature is cold, Bing Fire is needed.
Five Elements Theory
The interrelationships of the five elements are more complex than can be described
simply by the three most widely understood cycles of enhancing, controlling or
weakening. There are reverse effects to be considered when the proper balance is upset,
as well as benefits to associations that might seem to be antagonistic when viewed only
from a simplistic level. For example, although fire controls metal, strong metal needs fire
in order to be refined into useful implements. Each of the five elements is analyzed
below.
Wood
(1) Wood depends on Water to grow.
Too much Water can cause Wood to float away.
(2) Wood can light the Fire.
Too much Fire can set the Wood ablaze.
(3) Wood can control Earth.
Dense Earth can cause the Wood to break.
(4) Strong Wood needs Metal to become a log.
(5) Weak Wood can be chopped and cut by Metal.
(6) Strong Wood needs Fire to ease Wood’s stubbornness/inflexibility.
6
Fire
(1) Fire depends on Wood to feed it.
Too much Wood can suffocate Fire.
(2) Fire can enhance Earth.
Too much Earth can obscure (put out) Fire.
(3) Fire can control Metal.
Too much Metal can cause Fire to be exhausted.
(4) Strong Fire with Water can be beneficial to both.
(5) Weak Fire can be extinguished by water.
(6) Strong Fire can have its flame diminished by Earth.
Earth
(1) Earth depends on Fire to warm it up.
Too much Fire can scorch the Earth.
(2) Earth can produce Metal.
Too much Metal will loosen the Earth’s compactness.
(3) Earth can protect against Water.
Too much Water can cause erosion of Earth.
(4) Strong Earth needs Wood in order for irrigation to be possible.
(5) Weak Earth with Wood can cause Earth to collapse.
(6) Strong Earth needs Metal to loosen its compactness.
Metal
(1) Metal depends on the nourishment of Earth.
Too much Earth can bury the Metal too deeply.
(2) Metal can produce Water.
Too much Water can sink the Metal.
(3) Metal can chop Wood.
Hard Wood can damage the Metal.
(4) Strong Metal needs Fire to be refined into usable implements.
(5) Weak Metal can be melted by Fire.
(6) Strong Metal needs Water to reduce its sharpness.
Water
(1) Water depends on the nourishment of Metal.
Too much Metal will cloudy the Water.
(2) Water can nourish Wood.
Too much Wood can deplete the Water.
(3) Water can put out Fire.
Too much Fire can evaporate Water.
(4) Strong Water with Earth can form a swamp (mud).
(5) Weak Water with Earth can cause blockage.
7
(6) Strong Water with Wood can weaken water’s intensity.
Further Interactions
To weaken Wood, Ding Fire is needed. Bing Fire can help Wood grow.
To weaken Fire, Ji Earth (moist earth, mud) is more effective than Wu Earth (dry, sandy
soil).
To weaken Earth, Geng Metal is needed. Xin Metal is insufficient.
To Weaken Metal, Ren Water is needed.
To weaken Water, Jia Wood is needed. Yi Wood requires little Water.
To chop down Jia Wood, Geng Metal is used.
To cool down the temperature, Gui Water is used.
To warm up the temperature, Bing Fire is used.
To refine Metal, Ding Fire is used.
Dry/hot Earth can’t produce Metal.
Winter Wood with Fire is not weakening – instead, this is “reverse enhancing”.
Spring and summer Metal with Water is not weakening, but is reverse enhancing.
Spring and summer Earth must have Water.
Autumn and winter Earth must have Fire.
Summer Earth with Wood: the Wood will enhance Fire, not control Earth.
Useful, Favorable and Unfavorable Deities by Deity Strength in Chart
(1) Day Master is very strong with considerable Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai (parallel)

Favorable: Cheng Yin/Pien Yin, Cheng Kuan/Chi Sha, Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai.
Unfavorable: Cheng Tsai/Pien Tsai, Shih Shen/Shang Kuan
(7) Day Master is weak with considerable Cheng Tsai/Pien Tsai (wealth)
Useful Deity: Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai (or Cheng Yin/Pien Yin)
Favorable: Cheng Yin/Pien Yin, Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai
Unfavorable: Cheng Kuan/Chi Sha, Shih Shen/Shang Kuan, Cheng Tsai/Pien Tsai
(8) Day Master and Cheng Tsai with equal strength
Useful Deity: Pi Chien/Chieh Tsai
Note: A very strong chart (Day Master) will meet all three criteria as discussed in the file
“Strength or Weakness of the Day Master - Chart Structures and Conditions” – getting
the timing plus numbers in the stems and branches. A strong chart will meet some, but
not all, of the criteria.
End of file.
The individual stems in each month will be advanced level work.

TV
